Welcome to Part 7 of this series about the latest docuseries. Selena’s family, officials, and the media have left a bad taste in our mouths when it comes to Yolanda. The fact is, none of us really know her, none of us was there, nor were those closest to Selena. Where was all the concern when Selena was allegedly playing these cat-and-mouse games with Yolanda for weeks by herself? Supposedly, Selena wanted to handle this alone, and Abraham may or may not have known about what Selena and Chris were planning, in regard to obtaining the documents from Yolanda, depending on what you hear or where you read. It’s highly obvious that not many people can be trusted about what actually went down, not even Selena’s own family. They have raked in millions since she passed from the brand that she became posthumously.
Tina said that her family helped Yolanda move out of her Corpus Christi apartment and brought her possessions back to San Antonio in the weeks leading up to the shooting. Tina played a tape from Yolanda’s answering machine, the one left in her Corpus Christi apartment since she still had the lease until the end of March. One of the messages from March 1995 was about an orientation meeting for Yolanda to start a new nursing job. It’s befuddling because why wasn’t the date and time of the message heard as well? I mean, it’s highly possible the message was left around that time since answering machines only had so much memory to store messages for long periods of time.
One would question well if she wasn’t trying to start a new job in March, then at what other time, and why would she have wanted to start a new job when things were still copacetic between her, Selena, and her family, despite Abraham approaching Yolanda in the early months of 1995, confronting her about fans not receiving fan club packages. It’s also suspicious because perhaps that could be a recording of anyone saying all of that on a tape. The viewers don’t have time to waste on half assed evidence that may tell a different story, but it hasn’t gone unnoticed, and we’ll just leave it at that.
There were also messages on Yolanda’s answering machine that couldn’t have been doctored, messages from Selena herself, presumably after the March 9th, 1995 meeting. Selena still sounded like everything was fine between her and Yolanda. Selena still called her “Buffy,” which is a term of endearment. According to the official story, Selena fired Yolanda on March 9th, 1995, but then changed her mind. So was Selena faking it in the voicemails, or was she being sincere, to where things were still stable between her and Yolanda? Were those voicemails ever played for the court? If so, then why not? They shed light on Selena and Yolanda’s friendship. The voicemail messages contradict what we’ve been told to believe over the years, that Yolanda was out for revenge and wanted Selena dead, or that she was so obsessed with Selena that she couldn’t live without her. Those narratives just sound more hyperbolic and something out of a bad Hollywood movie.
The first episode of the docuseries concludes with Yolanda’s family saying that Selena wasn’t scared of Yolanda, that things were good, and someone tried to ruin that. Yolanda claimed to be afraid of Abraham, that he threatened her, that Abraham told Yolanda how to micromanage Selena, and that there were countless arguments between Selena and Abraham. Yolanda blamed Abraham for sending people to hurt her, slash her tires, and put bullets in her car, because he was this dark figure. Larry Young explained it perfectly, that Yolanda didn’t have to think as she was letting it flow, bashing Abraham during the standoff, so could she have been telling the truth? Yolanda said that she was scared and frightened of Abraham, scared to the point of thinking he would kill her. Yolanda claimed that he did things to other people in the past, and Abraham was intimidating. This all spilled out on the day of the murder during the standoff, and Yolanda has stuck to her story to this very day, but it’s still unknown if she’s pulling our chain because of how cunning and manipulative she was alleged to be.
