“SELENA AND YOLANDA: THE SECRETS BETWEEN THEM” – EPISODE 2 PART 9

By Maverick

Welcome to Part 9 of this series about the latest docuseries. In 1995, Dr. Ricardo Martinez was a successful and reputable plastic surgeon down in Monterrey. Selena liked him upon their first meeting, and he was always introduced as an investor from Mexico, as he was helping to expand Selena’s business. Tina said that Selena and Yolanda stayed over at Dr. Martinez’s apartment. Martinez was a married man with children, and she was also married, but regardless, Tina suspected more was going on with Selena and the Doc. Abraham introduced Selena to Martinez, and it was “love at first sight” according to Yolanda, alleging that they had some kind of affair. There have been several times that the rumor has been mentioned over the years. Is there any validity to it? Nothing conclusive like photos or videos, just all he said/she said.

Yolanda claimed that she would see Selena and the Doctor kissing and holding hands, to which she was worried about Chris, because she knew that Chris would be heartbroken. There’s no way to know for sure, unfortunately. It boils down to who you choose to believe. That’s why many Selena fans never bought into the affair rumors, saying that it was just Yolanda being vengeful and wanting to tarnish Selena’s reputation in death. Why would anyone want to believe her killer anyway, right? Well, many people actually do believe she might have had an affair, stating that Selena was human and was bound to make mistakes, that the family and media constantly put her on a pedestal as this human who can do no wrong.

Carlos Valdez, the lead prosecutor of the trial, said that Selena didn’t have an affair, based on the source of the intel, Yolanda. Dr. Martinez also denied it for 15 years when it was brought up in 1997 in the book “Selena’s Secrets” by Maria Celeste Arraras. Then in 2012, during a Univision interview, Martinez walked back on everything and admitted that the rumors were indeed true, despite denouncing them and calling Yolanda a liar. The fact that he admitted it after saying Yolanda was full of it is puzzling. Why admit to it all of these years later, after denying it initially? Was he trying to protect his marriage, perhaps? What would he stand to gain by coming out as Selena’s potential lover? Yolanda claimed that Selena was madly in love with him. Who the hell knows what the truth is at this point?

Veronica, Yolanda’s other niece, pulls out a red envelope note that says “Doctor’s secret” on it. In there was a pink envelope and a note that said “Tu iluminas mi vida, Selena, tu amigo por siempre, Ricardo. The translation read “You light up my life, Selena, I love you, your friend forever, Ricardo.” Has anyone ever seen a male say that to a female if they are just merely friends? Why even write a short letter and not just tell the person this directly? The Doc had to have known that her husband, Chris Perez, might stumble on it. Did he give it to her in person, or did he mail it to one of Selena’s addresses, such as her home or her business locations? The Saldivar family isn’t really doing much to vindicate Yolanda if they don’t provide more details. Otherwise, most will just brush this information off as ludicrous.

How do we know that he even wrote it? Was it ever authenticated as a match for Martinez’s handwriting? Yolanda said that she did a lot of lying, yeah, go figure, to cover up this so-called affair for Selena. According to Chris in his book “To Selena With Love,” he said that their marriage was on the rocks in late 1994, but also said that they both worked things out and wanted to remain married. The truth is, there is no way for us outsiders to unequivocally know the truth, but it’s highly possible that something was going on in Mexico other than business.
